Only the braking didn't really work satisfactorily. Canyon had equipped its bike with the Sram Guide RSC brake system, a brake that is easy to modulate but is rather stingy when it comes to sheer braking power. What to do? Freiburg-based tinkerer Trickstuff had the right tuning part ready for us: a laser-cut 223 millimetre brake disc for extra power instead of the 203 discs fitted. It is thicker than conventional discs, but fits all brakes. We retrofitted it.
The theory says: ten per cent more braking power. But in practice, the weak Guide brake felt like its powerful Code brother. "This is also due to the fact that the disc heats up less," says Trickstuff engineer Klaus Liedler, "because the temperature remains further away from the critical point at which fading sets in." We've been riding the large discs all season now and are very satisfied. Super: no sickling, no grinding, the brakes remain as quiet as a mouse even with monster discs.
Tip: If you use the Power pads from Trickstuff (€ 19.90), the performance increases even more. The Power pads won the BIKE pad test.
