REACH IN AND FEEL GOOD
Aching forearms, screeching noise piercing the ear canals. Impressions that every rider of cantilever brakes can remember. With the introduction of V-brakes at the beginning of the nineties, there was a sudden improvement. The new brakes had significantly more power. At the same time, the wave of lightweight anodised tuning rolled across Germany. Countless colourful brake arms clung to mountain bike rims.
Shortly afterwards, the fully arrived, speeds continued to rise and the call for even more robust brakes became louder. Enter the disc brake. They catapulted the V-brake out of the top braking league. But only after countless teething troubles had been overcome. Today, only a few manufacturers dominate the disc market. The performance of disc brakes is beyond question: they brake more precisely, more reliably and more weather-resistant than V-brakes ever could. We opted for a Hope "Mini" on our Scott. It may not provide the most power, but its milled aluminium body looks incredibly good.
Although V-brakes are theoretically at a disadvantage, they are still fitted to a large proportion of bikes. They are significantly cheaper. They also defend their niche in cross-country bikes. Here, the significantly lower weight simply plays a role.

DISC OR V-BRAKE

More than a question of conscience: the disc brake is clearly superior to the V-brake. Disc brakes score particularly well in terms of modulation. However, if you are afraid of the expensive conversion (after all, you usually also need a new set of wheels) or want to squeeze the last gram out of your bike, opt for V-brakes.
