Are rusting brake discs dangerous?
A BIKE reader described the following problem to us: My Magura brake disc has severe rust spots. Is this dangerous and can it be prevented?

BIKE: In winter, snow and road salt take their toll on the brake discs of your mountain bike. Once the bike is mounted on the rear rack, the brake disc of the disc brake blossoms like a young May. Unfortunately, manufacturers cannot use stainless steel for the brake discs because it does not generate enough friction. That's why low-rust steel is used, so the rust spots are only flash rust and harmless. You can make the braking surface shine again with steel wool, the other areas can be treated with chrome polish. This also prevents rapid re-rusting.
