It was 1998 when Uli Stanciuthe founder of BIKE Magazine, launched the BIKE Transalp. Stanciu was one of the first to cross the Alps on a mountain bike and wanted to create a new, unique challenge for the then burgeoning marathon scene. Almost 600 riders lined up at the start in Mittenwald in July 1998, including MTB pioneers such as Gary Fisher and Wolfgang Renner. The BIKE Transalp Challengeas it was called at the time, was a huge success.
