Strava has revised and redesigned its recording function with an update. Recording activities should now be more intuitive and user-friendly. After all, three out of four Strava users use the app to track their activities directly.

The new user interface for recording activities makes it easy to select the right sport. With just a few taps, a route can also be added for navigation during outdoor activities such as cycling, running and hiking. However, the new interface is only available for Android for the time being. The launch for iOS will follow shortly.

Strava itself has analysed how users use the app and found that almost three out of four users in 2024 use the recording function of the Strava app to log their activities.

The update is now available for Android and also allows users to track their activities on an intuitive, easy-to-understand map. Activity statistics are also displayed and updated in real time. The update for iOS will follow later this summer.

The Strava update in detail

  • Optimised navigation: The updated recording experience is now supported by the recently updated Map Rendering Engine (MRE). This new MRE provides a higher level of detail in Strava's map and route guidance.
  • Segments: It is now easier to discover segments, follow them and compete on them. Subscribers have the opportunity to improve their personal best times on live segments and can track their progress in real time.
  • Maps and statistics in one: No more need to switch screens during training. Strava users can now view their statistics and the map at the same time during the activity.
  • Real-time splits: Users can now track how long it takes them to complete certain sections of their training programme in real time to make their training even more effective.
  • Live stages: The recording feature will soon be expanded to include stages. Users will then be able to track and analyse their activities by marking stages at certain distances or intervals during training.

Those who use Strava Premium can get even more out of the recording experience, as Premium users have access to additional map layers such as winter map styles, 3D terrain, heat maps and points of interest.

This update is now available for Android and will be available for iOS in the coming weeks.
