In mid-January 2022 Strava rolled out an update for its route tool that specifically affects the maps of the training and tracking platform. So-called "points of interest" (POI for short) have been added to the Open Street Maps maps. This should enable Strava users to use the route function in the app more efficiently when navigating. However, planning tours in the web version should also be more convenient thanks to the inclusion of the Strava community's favourite places. The place markers shown in the Strava maps, which are represented by icons, are not just any general places of interest, but the most popular places that Strava users have travelled to on their recorded rides and tours. This means you can head for the best starting points or viewpoints in an unknown region or quickly find your way to the nearest bakery on a long bikepacking tour.
In the Web version you will find the revised maps with points of interest under "Routes", where you can also plan your tours. In the Strava app, you can access the function under the "Maps" tab. The route planning function requires a paid Strava membership, which costs €7.99 for individual months. For an annual package, you pay a total of 59.90 euros.
