New bike computers: VDO R series presentedPhoto: Hersteller
Cycle computers and GPS devices keep cyclists always aware of the most important tour data, whether on a bike tour or during training. From September 2022, there will be a new bike computer series from VDO. The R series includes five bike computers and sat navs for different requirements.

The VDO R1 and R2 bike computers provide the most important bike tour data, GPS and navigation are not included. If you like mountain tours, take a look at the R3 with integrated altimeter. Even more data and navigation functions are available in the VDO GPS devices R4 and R5.

I need basic functions: VDO R1 & R2

The VDO R1 and VDO R2 bike computers are designed to record the most important data on a bike tour as quickly and easily as possible. Symbols on the display indicate which data is currently being shown. Five functions can be read off the speedometer at any time: the current speed, the distance, the total distance, the journey time and the time. The large button can be used to switch between the data fields.

VDO R1 bike computer

The current speed, distance, total distance, journey time and time can be read off the R1. The wired version of the VDO R1 costs 19.95 euros, the wireless version of the bike speedometer is available for 39.95 euros.

VDO R2 bike computer

The VDO R2 has twice as many functions. In addition to the basic functions and temperature, it measures the average speed comparison as well as the maximum speed. This makes it a good companion for cyclists who like to be a little more sporty on the road. The wired version, VDO R2 WR costs 29.95 euros, the wireless version VDO R2 WL 49.95 euros.

How do you like this article?

The VDO R3 appeals to ambitious cyclists. This bike computer is only available wirelessly and has more extensive functions. The basic functions are supplemented by the integrated altimeter. This records data on the current altitude, the current incline or decline, metres in altitude uphill, total metres in altitude uphill and the maximum altitude of a tour.

The backlighting of the display ensures good readability at dusk or in the dark. A special feature is that the VDO R3 can be used on two bikes and records all tours that are completed on both bikes. In a kind of training diary, there is a monthly summary of the total values. The VDO R3 bike computer can optionally be coupled with a cadence sensor. The manufacturer claims a battery life of "more than two years".

The VDO R3 bike computer is available for 84.95 euros.

If you also want to use the bike computer to navigate on a bike tour, you may find a companion in the VDO R series with the R4 or R5.

The VDO R5 GPS bike computer offers more functions, 34 to be precise. Coupled with sensors for heart rate, for example, this device is the right choice for ambitious training.

The prices of the GPS devices are competitive with other devices. Bike sat navs99.95 is the manufacturer's recommended retail price for the R5. The GPS bike computer is available as a set with a heart rate and cadence sensor for 199.95 euros RRP.

The R5 GPS has the following additional functions:

  • Integrated air pressure sensor with barometric altitude measurement provides information on altitude, calculated inclines and declines
  • Graphic elevation profile
  • Sensors such as speed, heart rate and cadence sensors can be paired with ANT+ and BLE
  • 2.4 inch display
  • Up to 25 hours of battery life

What alternative products are available?

Some other functions can be found in the competition. Garmin, for example, has accident and theft detection in GPS devices such as the new Explore 2.
