The Chinese camera manufacturer Insta360 is launching a new 360-degree action cam on the market with the X5. According to the manufacturer, the camera is the company's most powerful and robust 360-degree camera to date. With 8K video recording, interchangeable lenses and AI-supported functions, Insta360 is aiming to raise the bar in the action cam sector.
The centrepiece of the Insta360 X5 Two 1/1.28 inch sensors, which are 144 per cent larger compared to the predecessor model X4. These larger sensors make it possible to capture more light and therefore improve image quality, especially in difficult lighting conditions. The camera can record 360-degree videos with a resolution of up to 8K at 30 frames per second. It utilises an oversampling of 11K to 8K to achieve the lowest possible loss of quality. Insta360 uses a triple AI chip system consisting of a 5-nanometre AI chip and two pro-imaging chips to process the image data. According to the manufacturer, this system offers 140 per cent more computing power and ensures improved noise suppression as well as clearer and more vivid images.
One of the main innovations of the Insta360 X5 is the new InstaFrame mode. This mode records two video files simultaneously: An instantly sharable flat video without post-processing and a full 360-degree video for fine-tuning later. With flat video, users can choose between a fixed view that follows a constant direction or a selfie view that keeps the rider in the frame throughout. This function could be particularly interesting for cyclists who want to share footage of their tours quickly and easily without sacrificing the flexibility of a 360-degree video.
More about action cams:
The Insta360 X5 was developed with the harsh conditions of action sports in mind. One of the innovations is the interchangeable lens system. If a lens is damaged during a tour, it can be replaced quickly and easily without having to replace the entire camera. The lenses themselves are made of a new, durable and scratch-resistant glass that further reduces the likelihood of damage. This feature could prove particularly useful for mountain bikers who are often out and about in challenging terrain.
For cyclists who want to capture not only images but also the sound of their rides, the Insta360 X5 offers a built-in windscreen and an improved audio algorithm. A multi-layered steel grille is designed to effectively suppress wind noise, while the optimised algorithm ensures clear, immersive sound. According to Insta360, the battery life has also been improved: with a capacity of 2400 mAh, the battery supports up to 185 minutes of recording time in 5.7K resolution in energy-saving mode. In addition, the battery can be charged from 0 to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes with a quick charge function - ideal for short breaks during a long bike ride.
With IP68 certification, the Insta360 X5 is waterproof to a depth of 15 metres. This not only makes it weatherproof for rides in the rain or through puddles, but also enables underwater recording without an additional housing. For cyclists who want to use their camera in a variety of ways, the X5 also offers a magnetic mounting system that allows you to quickly switch between different accessories.
The Insta360 X5 retains its FlowState stabilisation and 360-degree horizon lock, which should ensure particularly smooth shots even on bumpy rides. A new feature is the "Twist to Shoot" function, which allows the shot to be started by simply turning a selfie stick. Alternatively, voice control, gesture control or pairing with a wireless remote control are also available. This variety of operating options could be particularly interesting for cyclists who want to operate their camera while riding without taking their hands off the handlebars.
The Insta360 app has been redesigned and now offers a clearer user interface and new tools to make editing 360-degree content easier. A one-click dewarp function removes fisheye distortions for natural-looking shots, while a new option enables one-click export without editing or realignment. In addition, Insta360 Studio desktop software is available free of charge. The X5 is also compatible with Insta360+, a cloud service. This offers automatic file backup, instant sharing of 360-degree recordings, cloud editing and export and other functions that could simplify the workflow for cyclists.
