Garmin has unveiled the latest generation of its Fenix series: the Fenix 8 multisport smartwatch. The most striking new feature of this smartwatch is an Amoled display, and the map function has also been significantly improved.

The Garmin Fenix 8 is now available with an Amoled display for the first time. Intense colours and high contrast are already familiar from competitor models such as the Suunto Race. Nevertheless, Garmin continues to offer variants with the energy-saving MIP display (Memory-in-Pixel) and improved solar charging lens. According to the press release, the battery life has been increased compared to the previous model. The 51 mm Amoled model of the smartwatch promises a battery life of up to 29 days in smartwatch mode, while the 51 mm solar model with an always-on display is expected to last up to 48 days. However, it is important to note that, as with all GPS sports watches, the battery life is considerably shorter when using the routing function. The smallest Amoled version of the watch (47 mm stainless steel) weighs 66 g including the strap, while the 51 mm version weighs 102 g.

Garmin Fenix 8: with improved map display

The Garmin Fenix 8 comes with improved map functions, including dynamic RoundTrip routing and pre-installed topo maps for Europe. A new side-mounted sensor protector increases robustness and the smartwatch has been tested to US military standards for durability. It also offers sport-specific training plans. Training metrics such as endurance value, hill score, VO2 max and training status are designed to help you assess your own performance. During training, PacePro provides speed data that takes into account the route profile and individual targets for ambitious climbs. ClimbPro provides real-time information on current and upcoming climbs.

In addition - and already available on its predecessors - the Garmin Fenix 8 is equipped with health monitoring functions, including PulseOX5 on the wrist, Body Battery, Jetlag Advisor, Sleep Coach and nap detection. After waking up, the smartwatch creates a personalised morning report that provides an overview of the sleep quality of the previous night, including the heart rate variability (HRV) status.
