Garmin Connect app: New function and new design
GPS and smartwatch manufacturer Garmin has announced new features for its Connect app. Users of Garmin products can already download the beta software version for testing before it is made available to everyone later this year. What's new in the app and what can the beta programme do?

What is the Garmin Connect app?

Garmin is known for its sports watches, which can record performance and health data in numerous sports. This data can be accessed and analysed via the Garmin Connect app. The app's functions also include the creation of personalised training plans, helpful tips and much more.

Now the new version is to have a revised design and additional functions. Since the beginning of January, selected Garmin users have been invited to download the beta version of the Garmin Connect app to test and evaluate it. However, non-invited users can also try out the programme now: On the Garmin website, you can also register for beta testing independently.

The design of the app is still relatively simple: All information can be called up in a long list in the overview. In the beta version, however, this will be displayed more clearly in tiles that can be swiped to the side. The first images suggest that the overview already focusses more on the graphics, which in the current version are hidden behind the respective button.

In addition to a clearer design, the new features also include some new functions: Among other things, the retrieval of interesting information about an upcoming competition, such as weather forecasts, as well as the selection from a large amount of the familiar statistics on performance and health data, as well as the clarity of training plans and your own progress, which you can also display in expedition, badge, group and family challenges.

By registering for the beta programme, users gain access to software updates and functions that are not yet available, as well as the opportunity to rate this version and provide feedback. However, according to the registration page, there seems to be a small catch: "If you leave the beta software programme, the beta software will remain on your device until the final version of the software is available. Once the software is updated to the final version, your device will no longer receive beta software updates."

Download and test the beta version

Garmin has uploaded a video tutorial explaining in English how to download the beta version of the Garmin Connect app. Even for non-native speakers, the video should be easy to understand by pausing several times during the most important steps.

The manufacturer has more information about the app on its website, including an FAQ. Before registering, you must select the Garmin device with which you want to test the beta version. The website then checks the compatibility of the device. A list of supported devices is also shown there.
