With their quick-change Look pedal, the GPS specialists are competing with systems from SRM and CycleOps.

The idea has been floating around for several years, but until now there has been no realisation. Polar's attempt never made it into series production. But now Garmin is injecting new life into the power measurement system market with its "Vector" pedal. SRM has eked out a lonely existence there since 1986. However, the complicated measuring equipment is located in the crank, which makes it difficult to switch between several bikes.

The power calculation is based on 256 measured values per second

This is now different with the Vector from Garmin: the strain gauge, which measures the twisting of the axle that is converted into power, sits on the pedal axle of a Keo carbon pedal from Look. However, the developers at Look and Garmin are already working on a solution with an MTB pedal. The pedal, which will be available from March, measures at 256 Hertz and sends a signal to the computer once per second via ANT+. This can be an Edge from Garmin or any other device compatible with this standard.

Lightest watt measuring system on the market

The Vector is expected to cost 1295 euros. The Look Keo weighs 178 grams per pedal including the measuring unit and can also display the distribution of left and right pedals in addition to the watt values. This makes it possible to analyse an out-of-round pedal stroke, for example.

New GPS computer: Edge 200

With the Edge 200, Garmin is also launching a very easy-to-use GPS computer. The Edge 200 has four buttons, a greyscale display and is primarily intended for touring cyclists who can do without the training functions of the Edge 800. It costs 149 euros and can record tracks but cannot display maps.

Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
