There are now more options than ever for minimising risk on a solo bike tour. Friends can track your location in real time via a live tracking app. Crash sensors automatically call for help in the event of a fall, and satellite systems enable emergency calls to be made even in the remotest corners of the earth. The crash sensors do not immediately call in the cavalry. Only if the driver does not respond to the app's loud demand is an emergency call made and help summoned.
Real-Time GPS Tracker 2
The Android app updates the user's location every few seconds on Google Maps-based maps. Friends can be notified via email, SMS or Facebook, for example.
Strava beacon function
Premium members can activate the new security function. Up to three selected people can then track the athlete's location in real time. Only works with a Summit account.
Garmin accident detection
Garmin Edge devices can recognise an accident. If they are connected to the Connect app, the current location coordinates are automatically sent to pre-defined emergency contacts.
Specialised Angi
Price 49.90 euros
The ten gram sensor on the back of the helmet uses an acceleration sensor and gyroscope to measure rotational and impact forces. In the event of a fall, the connected app sends an accident notification including location to predetermined contacts after a countdown has elapsed. Currently only available for selected Specialized helmets.
Tocsen
Price 75 euros
Similar to the Specialized sensor, the small Tocsen button on the helmet detects when the rider has fallen. Before the call for help is sent to the emergency contacts, the app warns with a signal tone. The alarm can be cancelled by tapping the sensor. Clever: The app also notifies other Tocsen users who are nearby.
Garmin Inreach Mini
Price from 349 euros
The 100 gram device communicates via the Iridium satellite network and is perfect for use in remote areas. An SOS emergency call goes directly to the GEOS emergency call centre, which is manned 24 hours a day. Messages, maps and weather data can be received via the inReach Mini. However, a data tariff is required for this.
Spot Gen 3
Price 178.95 Euro
As soon as you start moving, the Gen 3 sends pre-programmed OK messages at defined intervals. In an emergency situation, the GEOS control centre can be notified at the touch of a button. Alternatively, personal contacts can be alerted in non-life-threatening situations. An annual subscription is also required here.
