For the bike season, Garmin is upgrading its popular Edge series with the Edge 130 Plus and Edge 1030 Plus on. Like the new products from 2019 - the Edge 530 and 830 - the GPS computers should also have more bike-friendly functions.
With extended indoor and outdoor training plans, the Edge 130 Plus and the can be used all year round and personal performance can be optimised with an individual training analysis. As with the previous models, various systems (GPS, Glonass and Galileo) are used for navigation - so nothing stands in the way of accurate data recording. The "Popularity Routing" function on the new models also uses data from other users when calculating routes and primarily selects routes that are frequently travelled. Routes can also be created quickly and easily via Garmin Connect, Strava or Komoot. Both models have the typical Garmin safety functions such as automatic accident detection and live tracking.
Both the 1030 Plus and the Edge 130 Plus are now equipped with the Climb Pro function, which displays the ascents of the route with an elevation and gradient profile, thus always revealing what lies ahead. However, this is not entirely new, as the Edge 530 and 830 already have this practical function.
The new features of the Edge 130 Plus compared to its predecessor model are limited. However, at 30 euros, you pay less than the Edge 1030 Plus compared to its predecessor. With its 1.8-inch greyscale display, the Edge 130 Plus remains a compact and lightweight device weighing just 33 grams. The GPS computer is operated via buttons.
In addition to the ClimbPro function, the indoor training function is new. This should make it possible to pair the device with a smart trainer. Another new feature is the MTB Dynamics function, which can be used to analyse jumps and flow characteristics - something that the Edge brothers 530 and 830 can already do.
However, the Edge 130 Plus seems to have to make concessions in favour of the new features. With a reported twelve hours of battery life, this is three hours less than its predecessor.

The number of new features on the Edge 1030 Plus is greater, as is the surcharge compared to the previous model. You will have to pay 100 euros more for the add-ons. The same housing, but in classic black, the GPS computer fits on any bike. The colour touchscreen display is now said to be much more sensitive and contrasty, which should match the top display of the Edge 830. A new processor should ensure faster route calculation and anyone who deviates from the planned course should now be better navigated back to the planned route. The "ForkSight" function also predicts turn-offs from trails, which is also in line with some newer Edge models. A new feature is the magnetometer, which should guarantee more precise positioning.
With 32 GB of memory, Garmin has dispensed with a microSD card for the Edge 1030 Plus and now also offers pre-installed maps of North America and North Africa in addition to Europe. Additional maps can be installed. Bikers can look forward to an extended TrailsForks database. Particularly practical: Profiles with personalised settings from other Garmin models can be transferred to the Edge 1030 Plus. You can also access personalised workout and training plan recommendations. The maximum battery life is increased from 20 to 24 hours. A Charge battery pack can be attached as usual to further extend the battery life.
