Tools, a spare tube, some gels, a windbreaker and a two-litre hydration bladder. We stuffed all of this into the five-litre Deuter rucksack on the Cape Epic.

Admittedly, the Road One is actually aimed at racing cyclists. But it embodies exactly what marathon riders want for multi-day stage races: minimalist storage space. It offers far more than a shoulder bag with two cords. The back system and straps are comfortably padded and the large main compartment is neatly divided. Two zipped pockets at the top and bottom offer space for a mobile phone, camera and rain cover. After eight days of dust and dirt bombardment, the zips do catch a little, but work perfectly. The Road One would benefit from a lap belt. It would sit even more snugly on the back on bumpy descents - without slipping.
