We compared the first special bike backpack Deuter BIKE 1 with the latest protector backpack Deuter Attack. This is how much the modern backpack for freeriders still has to do with the original model.

The original model and the latest generation no longer have too much in common, as the Bike 1 has been continuously developed and modified into new models over the years. In 2005, the first protector backpack was designed for skiers and bikers. Deuter named it Attack. The name should be the programme, because this special rucksack wanted to provide bikers with back protection in addition to sophisticated pocket management and comfortable carrying to prepare them for risky freeride missions and bike park use. Deuter named the integrated foam plate the Shield System and had it tested by TÜV. This made the Deuter Attack the world's first protector backpack with TÜV certification. The Attack has also been further developed and pumped full of clever details and high-tech: Contact back system for a snug fit and comfort, ergonomic shoulder and hip straps, highly tear-resistant material and durable zips, etc. Deuter offers special models for women (SL), tall bikers (EL), kids and teens (JR) in its programme.

As is so often the case, innovations are born out of challenges. Andi Heckmair, a pioneer of the Transalp and the son of a mountaineering legend, was the first mountain biker to dare to cross the Alps in 1990. On his adventure, he used an ordinary hiking model as a rucksack. After the successful Transalp trip, Heckmair came to a valuable realisation: a special rucksack for bikers was needed. The idea was born shortly afterwards in a pub over a wheat beer. Together with Bernd Kullmann, who was working as a product developer at Deuter at the time, Heckmair sketched out the "Bike 1". An easily accessible pocket for the water bottle, a helmet holder, a tool bag and a comfortable, well-ventilated carrying system were essential for him. The sewing machines were then set in motion at the company headquarters in Augsburg. From today's perspective, the "BIKE 1" may seem as traditional as a Dolomiti ice cream from Langnese, but the design was considered bold and futuristic at the time. The rucksack was launched a year later and sold out in no time at all.

Details of the Deuter BIKE 1

  • Design innovation: Round cuts were an exception at the time.
  • Padded shoulder straps for high carrying comfort, even with heavy loads.
  • The helmet could be attached to straps.
  • Side pockets for water bottle or spare inner tube. New: The elasticated rubber ensures that the contents do not get lost.
  • Centrepiece: The special carrying system should ensure sufficient air circulation on the back
  • The tool bag was deliberately designed to be quite large - mini tools were a thing of the future

Born in South Baden, Laurin Lehner is, by his own admission, a lousy racer. Maybe that's why he is fascinated by creative, playful biking. What counts for him is not how fast you get from A to B, but what happens in between. Lehner writes reports, interviews scene celebrities and tests products and bikes - preferably those with a lot of suspension travel.
