The fact that the messenger bag has been able to establish itself in the scene as an alternative to the tried and tested rucksack is thanks to a central carrying trick: an additional strap around the waist or across the chest stabilises the bag on the back so that the load cannot slide forwards when cycling as with normal shoulder bags.
Ideally, a messenger bag sits as securely as a rucksack, but allows access to its contents without having to take it off completely. This makes them practical as well as being an aesthetic argument against backpacks in the office.
