Yes, we thought the design of the new Winora Radius was a success: from the slightly tapered head tube, which neatly houses the cables and wires, to the seemingly seamlessly integrated luggage rack. The system carrier plate on the smooth rack accommodates panniers and other luggage solutions.
The aluminium frame, which is also technically well-finished – a great feature: the integrated tow bar on the rear axle – houses a Bosch Performance Line drive, whilst the down tube contains a 500-watt-hour battery that’s a bit fiddly to remove. The motor runs as smoothly as ever and works well with the five-speed Nexus hub in the rear wheel.
With the Speedlifter, the seat position can be adjusted to suit any height in a matter of seconds. It’s even quicker to lower the saddle to a comfortable standing height using the handlebar lever whilst waiting at the traffic lights.
The Winora Radius’s handling: smooth, with steering as precise as if on rails and excellent straight-line stability – thanks in part to its generous wheelbase of a full 110 centimetres. When stopping at traffic lights, a simple press of the handlebar lever is all it takes for the saddle to lower to the comfort position. Release the lever briefly after setting off, and you’re back at pedalling height in no time. You tend to sit upright and completely relaxed, enjoying the handling.
I’m not keen on the centre stand, which barely manages to hold the bike with 20 kilos of luggage on the rack and gets in the way when manoeuvring. For 3,999 euros, you get a lot in terms of both looks and practicality, even if some might feel that a belt drive is all that’s missing to make this compact, well-rounded bike perfect.
The Radius is a bike that’s a joy to look at and ride; with its family-friendly features, MIK carrier and trailer hitch, it’s also great for transport. The ride quality is very precise and balanced, and the design is sure to appeal to many... – Georg Bleicher, Test Editor
