Our surprise guest comes from Decathlon: the Elops LD900 costs less than half the price of many of its competitors at just under 710 euros. Can something like this work?

The brand name "Elops" doesn't sound very French or elegant. We don't know how it came about, but Decathlon consistently pursues the policy of developing its own brand and model names for all sporting goods. The frames, rigid forks and many other components of the bikes and e-bikes in Decathlon's range are also produced in specially commissioned supplier factories and are not available anywhere else in the shops. This means that the discounter chain, which has recently expanded rapidly in Germany, can largely avoid comparability with competitors' products. However, this also means that information about materials, components, production processes, delivery routes and the quality of bicycle components, for example, remains in the dark. Not even industry insiders can reliably assess such parts. Decathlon's own wholesale stores, a huge range covering all kinds of sports and hard-calculated sales prices, usually well below the level of all competitors, give it a clear unique position. Even if bicycles are not the main focus of the product range, the impression is that they can simply do everything. And they do it cheaply.

The Elops LD900 is the higher quality of two all-round models with an aluminium frame and fork, derailleur gears, disc brakes and dynamo light that are suitable for everyday use. The letters LD can be translated as "Long Distance", and the company text also states that the bikes are intended for frequent travellers and year-round commuters.

Good despite favourable

When you get on the bike for the first time, it becomes clear that the advertising promises are not made up out of thin air: You sit on the LD900 in a pleasantly relaxed but usefully sporty position. In size M, the slim, tightly padded saddle is slightly above handlebar level, the hands rest loosely on the not too wide handlebars on contoured grips with a harmonious cork look. There is a rubber bellow between the head tube and fork shoulder, which conceals a steerer tube suspension with 30 millimetres of travel. This is not further adjustable, but reacts flexibly to larger impacts such as kerbs or potholes. The LD900 feels stable, safe and trustworthy in all riding situations. The steering is balanced and the bike can be steered precisely. The solidity and lateral stiffness of the aluminium frame are high - astonishing considering the small support widths at the joints and slim tube diameters. Despite the presumably high wall thicknesses, these are not primitive "water pipes": The bike remains respectably light with a total weight of around 14 kilos. With a full pannier load (22 kilos in two panniers), the bike didn't get out of hand; up to twelve kilos of luggage would be recommended.

Some details are above average. For example, most pipe joints are smooth welded. A second, smoother weld seam is applied by hand. This increases strength, looks elegant - and is easier to clean. The tyres run exceptionally quietly and with low resistance on asphalt and firm road surfaces. However, on gravel or loose surfaces, especially in the wet, they lose tracking and grip early on.
The drivetrain features the mid-range 1x11 NX drivetrain from SRAM. Its gear ratio can also cope with longer climbs, and the range of 382 per cent is sufficient for normal operation without extremes. Here you operate all gears in sequence with just the left lever. This works perfectly, but the gearstick is sensitive to changes in cable length due to its design. You have to readjust it frequently and very precisely, which is done using an easy-to-grip tommy screw on the shifter. The hydraulic discs come from the mass manufacturer Tektro and also work flawlessly. The AXA headlight is not entirely convincing: the light intensity and light field are only lower mid-range. It is sufficient for urban riding. The mudguards are rattle-free and long enough, although on the rear wheel the cable tube does not find a permanent hold and sags on the tyres. However, this could be easily repaired with a cable tie.

Overall, it is amazing how competent and solid the Elops is. Even with frequent use, you only have to make a few compromises. Even small money is well invested.
