The workmanship on the test bike is excellent: all connections are bolted according to specifications, contact points are greased and cables, cables and lines are perfectly routed. Like its sister models with Alfine 11, Rohloff or XT drivetrains, the Activa Pro's massive-looking aluminium frame is smoothly ground at the joints of the variously shaped tubes and looks as if it has been cast from a single mould. The tapered head tube accommodates a fork with a similarly tapered steerer tube - this gives the bike exceptionally high lateral stiffness, which is particularly appreciated when carrying a heavy load of luggage. At the same time, the short head tube creates a low centre of gravity, and the Activa feels stable and secure.
The cleverly chosen wheels also play a major role: as 27.5-inch wheels with thick tyres, they offer the smooth running and rolling performance of a narrow 28er, but with better grip and damping without ever feeling cumbersome. And the frame remains manoeuvrable. Despite its weight, the Activa's handling remains sporty. The P1.18 gears and Gates drive make it strong in all conceivable riding situations. It is just as suitable for long luggage tours as it is for commuting to the office - all year round. Brakes, lights, front and rear pannier racks are all top class. The stable adjustable stem is particularly clever. The bike runs smoothly, is easy to accelerate and precise to steer. However, we would definitely fit the kickstand to the chain stay (or have it fitted)!
