All paths, one bike: Velotraum Finder FD1
Road, forest track or narrow path - the terrain for touring cyclists and commuters is often very demanding. The Velotraum Finder accepts no limits: its concept works in all cases.

"We missed the target," admitted Stefan Stiener from Velotraum contritely. His "Finder", the most stable and versatile pathfinder in the Swabian company's programme, was supposed to illuminate the sporty end of the scale as an ultra-light version despite its concept-immanent 27.5-inch wheels. However, the intended new Schwalbe Big One proved to be unsuitable for this all-round bike: "The tyre was simply unrideable." So Stiener resorted to the massive Super Moto-X tyre. Its 910 grams on a wide 44-millimetre rim now define the foundations of the Finder: thanks to meticulous pressure adjustment, these wheels master the widest possible balancing act between super-fast tarmac milling (2.5 bar) and confident forest floor riding at a low pressure of 0.7 bar (at 75 kilos rider weight without luggage).

A pump should therefore always be taken on tour: a few tenths of a bar make a noticeable difference. The Super Motos develop amazing off-road grip at low pressure. Of course, this always increases the rolling resistance. 1.3 bar was ultimately the sweet spot in our test experience: the sporty bike with its extra-stable aluminium frame runs light-footed and fast, while the direct, precise steering makes a decisive contribution to the feel-good effect.

The gyroscopic forces on the front wheel are relatively low, but noticeably higher than those of the similarly equipped Idworx: the weight difference between the two tyres is 125 grams! The XTR derailleur and hydraulic brakes provide an exemplary crisp drive and superior deceleration - you don't necessarily need them, but they are extremely pleasant. If you add luggage, the Finder transports it as if on rails. No wonder, if you take a closer look at the frame and fork. Low maintenance, versatility and safety are convincingly combined here. The 14 kilos feel good; the failed lightweight construction attempt would have saved a good 1.2 kilos. But this "half-fat version" is also one of our favourite bikes. But next time, please return with a dropper post!

Conclusion: The so-called "Plus" concept makes the wide-tyred Finder an extremely versatile vehicle for almost all surfaces and landscapes: This "pathfinder" combines sporty performance with extreme stability. Hub-belt drives or a more upright seating position are also possible. As a bike for short or long adventures, the Finder also transports luggage with ease.
