The KTM Revelator Syro Prestige AXS power metre is not a traditional endurance bike. It’s perhaps too specialised for that. But it is a state-of-the-art road bike with high-quality technical specifications. With the SRAM Red XPLR AXS 1×13, the Austrian manufacturer has fitted the latest and most sophisticated single-chainring groupset – now featuring a 48-tooth chainring for the first time.
At first glance, the decision to fit a groupset originally designed for gravel riding onto an aero road bike appears to be a compromise. The 13-speed cassette cannot offer the fine gear progression of a 2×12 system. However, the large chainring is intended to adapt the drivetrain to fast road riding.
It would appear, then, that with the new Revelator Syro Prestige AXS 1x13, KTM is aiming neither at those who want to spend hours climbing mountains, nor at anyone looking to sprint at 70 km/h. The Revelator Syro strikes a balance between these extremes – and that goes for the price too. KTM’s all-round racing bike is aimed more at the general public who simply want a fast road bike with a state-of-the-art, low-maintenance high-tech drivetrain, and who, whilst not obsessing over every last gram, do want to keep an eye on their budget.
The Road AeroLite Premium Carbon frame is KTM’s answer to the classic trade-off between aerodynamic profiling and weight optimisation. The term ‘AeroLite’ gives away the intention: not a pure wind tunnel racer, nor a lightweight climbing frame, but a compromise that is commonplace in this price range – and one in which KTM has delivered a solid piece of craftsmanship. It’s paired with the in-house Revelator Syro Premium Carbon F20 carbon fork.
A total weight of 7.6 kg is a respectable figure for a fully-equipped disc-brake road bike with electronic gear-shifting – not a lightweight record, but that was hardly to be expected at the asking price of 6,799 euros. By way of comparison: the Alto Exonic, KTM’s lightest road bike frame, weighs in at 6.9 kg – but at €7,999, it costs significantly more. The Syro Prestige offers more features for less money, trading weight for practicality in the process.
The Revelator Syro range places greater emphasis on aerodynamics than the Alto range. However, that does not mean the Syro is an uncompromising racing machine. With its balanced combination of endurance comfort and aerodynamic performance, the Revelator Syro is designed for long rides as well as ambitious group rides – the slightly more upright riding position ensures a relaxed riding experience even after many hours in the saddle.
This is a key difference compared to pure aero road bikes such as the Trek Madone or the Specialized Venge, which are clearly designed for racing efficiency with an aggressive stack-reach ratio and significantly more compact geometry. The Syro occupies a different niche: closer to the Scott Foil than the Specialized Tarmac, though without quite matching the comfort profile of a Canyon Endurace. In practice, this means: a bike that feels at home even on long rides and over varied terrain, but which noticeably reaches its limits on high-altitude mountain passes or when riding in the slipstream of a fast group race.
Another feature that sets the Syro apart from classic aero road bikes is the FIS – Full Integrated Storage in the down tube. In the storage compartment with a magnetic Fidlock fastening, a spare inner tube, CO₂ cartridge or personal items are safely stowed away at all times and quickly to hand. The system can be customised with specially designed accessories. This is a real bonus for everyday use, but it also sends a clear message: the Revelator Syro aims to be more than just fast.
With frame sizes ranging from XXS to XXL, there’s a suitable model for almost every body size. That’s not something you can take for granted in this price range.

The SRAM Red XPLR AXS 1x13-speed drivetrain (reviewed here) is the American brand’s first electronic single-chainring groupset featuring 13 rear sprockets – and its direct-mount rear derailleur marks a clear shift away from classic road bike technology towards the world of mountain biking. The XPLR shares its shifters, cranks, chain and brakes with the Red AXS road groupset – but when it comes to the rear derailleur, it draws on a different branch of the SRAM family tree: mountain biking.
This makes the system conceptually interesting and robust off-road – but when ridden on the tarmac on an aero road bike, it raises a few questions that need to be answered honestly.
The new Red XPLR rear derailleur is mounted directly onto the frame – this requires a UDH interface. Not only is the rear derailleur more robust, but thanks to its full-mount installation on the UDH dropout, it also eliminates the need for a great deal of adjustment. Once configured via the SRAM app, no further readjustment should be necessary – a real everyday advantage over traditional derailleur hanger designs.
Doing away with a front derailleur saves weight, simplifies the drivetrain and thus makes it less prone to faults. In addition, shifting is simpler, there is no overlap between gears and there is a lower risk of the chain coming off.
Up to the 32-tooth sprocket, the new cassette has the same gear ratios as a 10–36 12-speed road cassette; the gear ratios in this range are between 8 and 15 per cent – which, in practice, means there is hardly any compromise in terms of speed. That is the key takeaway for road use: within the speed range actively used by an ambitious racing cyclist, the gear ratios work surprisingly well.
The KTM Revelator Syro Prestige features a 48T chainring for the first time – a clear adaptation for road riding. By way of comparison: when the XPLR was used in the professional peloton – for example, by the Lidl-Trek team at the Omloop het Nieuwsblad – the 10-46 cassette at the rear was combined with 52- or 54-tooth chainrings. The KTM’s 48-tooth chainring therefore strikes a reasonable balance between gravel and road use – allowing speeds of around 55 km/h at 90 rpm on the smallest sprocket, without completely sacrificing climbing capabilities.
However, having just one chainring often means a narrower gear range, which usually requires compromises when it comes to the smallest or largest gear and results in larger gear steps – yet, thanks to the 13 sprockets, the gear range (460 per cent) is still sufficient for a wide range of uses. The top three sprockets (38T–46T) have the largest gaps between them – precisely where a 2×12 system really comes into its own on an uphill climb.
SRAM is thus building what is currently the most versatile electronic single-chainring setup. That’s a fair assessment – but it’s worth pointing out the limitations: anyone who regularly rides at the fast pace of a slipstream group, between 35 and 45 km/h, will notice the lack of intermediate gears found in a 2×12 system. On the other hand, anyone who covers a wide range of terrain from flat to moderately challenging and prioritises simplicity and robustness will appreciate the system.
Even in professional racing, the single-chainring drivetrain is not regarded as a one-size-fits-all solution – the Lidl-Trek Team sees its main advantages in classic races on cobbled sections, where a stiffer system with less chain movement comes into its own. On normal tarmac, the 2-speed system remains the more precise choice for many power ranges.
The integrated power metre is one of the standout features of this configuration. SRAM has integrated it directly into the crankset – a cleaner and lighter design compared to retrofitted solutions. The power metre can be unscrewed and is therefore reusable – which is a real improvement on the previous generation and makes ongoing use more cost-effective. The complete groupset, including the power metre, is available from 4,465 euros – a price that puts the total cost of the complete bike into perspective.
The levers on the SRAM Red XPLR AXS are taken from the Red AXS road groupset; when held in the brake-lever position, 80 per cent less hand force is said to be required than with the previous model to achieve the same braking power – and 33 per cent less when held on the lower handlebar. The permissible system weight of 117 kg is rather tight for a carbon road bike in this price range. After deducting the stated empty weight of 7.3 kg, there is less than 110 kg of payload remaining. Heavier riders should check this before purchasing – not least because the specification covers both the rider and their kit. High-performance carbon frames are, by their very nature, subject to tighter system weight limits than aluminium constructions, and the manufacturer’s specification should be taken seriously.
6,799 euros isn’t a bargain – but it’s a fair price. The SRAM Red XPLR AXS 1x13 The power metre alone costs from 4,465 euros. Add to that the frame, fork, brakes, wheels and handlebars – the package is fairly priced in this context.
For a direct comparison within the KTM range: The Alto Exonic AXS, as the lightweight counterpart with a total weight of 6.6 kilograms, features a classic SRAM Red AXS 2×12 drivetrain with a power metre – but at 7,999 euros, it also costs 1,200 euros more. If you’re counting every gramme and ride exclusively on tarmac, that’s the better choice for you. If you’re looking for a technically advanced, everyday-ready aero road bike with a state-of-the-art single-chainring drivetrain, the Syro Prestige is an exciting option.
A comparison with the prestigious competition shows just how attractive the price is: The recently unveiled Trek Domane, fitted with SRAM’s new single-chainring top-of-the-range groupset, weighs one kilo less, just like the KTM Revelator Alto Exonic, but costs over 10,000 euros.
The KTM Revelator Syro Prestige is not purely an aero road bike. With its balanced combination of endurance comfort and aerodynamic performance, it is aimed at riders who are looking for long adventures as well as ambitious group rides. However, if you’re looking for an uncompromising aero road bike for drafting or a pure climbing bike, this isn’t the one for you.
The SRAM Red XPLR AXS 1×13 is a major technical achievement: it’s more robust, lighter and offers a wider gear range than the previous generation. At racing speeds, the gear ratios range from 8 to 15 per cent – meaning, in practice, there is hardly any compromise compared to traditional road cassettes. Simpler gear changes, no gear overlap and a lower risk of the chain coming off are real everyday benefits. The integrated, separately replaceable power metre is a key standard feature for training-focused cyclists.
Nevertheless, the 1×13 system remains a compromise – and it’s important to be aware of this: having just one chainring usually means compromises in the lowest or highest gear and results in larger gear steps. This is tolerable within the range of speeds you’ll actually be cycling at; however, on highly varied terrain or when riding in a tight group, connoisseurs will miss the comfort of a 2×12 system.
For ambitious all-round cyclists who prefer a low-maintenance, wide-range drivetrain to a classic double chainring – and who aren’t necessarily focused on shaving off every last gramme, but are certainly mindful of their budget – the Revelator Syro Prestige is a strong package at a fair price. On the other hand, those who primarily ride at the limit in a slipstream group or in varied high-altitude mountain terrain should not shy away from a direct comparison with a 2×12 system.
