18.8 kilograms for a fully motorised e-MTB with a 600 Wh battery – this figure certainly catches the eye. However, it is not the result of a completely new lightweight platform. The frame and drivetrain are the same as those found on the familiar Levo R series models and, taken on their own, are not among the lightest in their class. The frame in particular, due to its design featuring a removable battery, weighs slightly more than modern designs with a permanently integrated battery.
Instead of a new platform, Specialized has consistently opted for the very finest lightweight components. Virtually every component has been replaced with exceptionally lightweight, high-end parts. The carbon cockpit unit, as well as the wheels and tyres, are even manufactured in-house. The Levo R Ultralight thus impressively demonstrates the lightweight potential inherent in the existing platform. However, the record-breaking weights in the full-power segment remain the preserve of bikes that combine the same high-end components with an even lighter frame platform and a sleeker drivetrain.
Unfortunately, however, the most intriguing question about this special edition remains unanswered. This is because Specialized has not yet announced an official retail price. Given the extremely high-end specifications of the Special edition of the Levo 4 However, at around 20,000 euros, the Levo R Ultralight is likely to appeal only to a very exclusive group of buyers.
I also find it problematic that, that some of the modifications no longer meet the requirements for a trail bike with 140 millimetres of suspension travel. When a trail bike is modified, it should still be fully usable as a trail bike afterwards. In my opinion, this is no longer the case with the Levor R Ultralight.
The Levo R is Specialized’s new trail e-MTB, was unveiled in early 2026 and is aimed at riders who prefer a lightweight, agile e-bike to a heavy e-enduro with long travel. Technically, it is based on the Turbo Levo 4 platform, but has been systematically engineered for lower weight and greater propulsion. To achieve this, Specialised has reduced the suspension travel to 140/130 millimetres, fitted 29-inch wheels across the range and optimised the carbon frame with a new fibre layout. Despite the identical basic design, the Levo R saves more than half a kilogramme on the frame alone compared to the Levo 4. Specialized has saved further grams through the use of lighter, faster tyres, lighter wheels and compromises in the braking system. It is powered by the familiar Specialized 3.1 motor, which delivers up to 850 watts of peak power and 111 Newton-metres of torque, depending on the model. The American manufacturer fits a removable 840 Wh battery as standard, just like on the standard Levo 4. With its balanced character, the Levo R positions itself as a sporty all-round e-MTB for long rides and flowing trails – less stable than the Levo 4, but significantly more agile and lighter.
Even the previous top-of-the-range model, the Turbo Levo R S-Works, weighs in at 21.3 kilograms, making it one of the lightest fully motorised trail e-MTBs in its class. To reduce the weight of the new Ultralight version by a further 2.5 kilograms, Specialised dug deep into its lightweight design toolbox. The biggest contribution comes from switching from the 840 Wh battery to the 600 Wh battery. This change alone saves around 1.2 kg compared with the standard model.
Lightweight construction was also a consistent priority when it came to the wheels. Instead of the trail-suitable Roval Traverse SL2, Specialized has fitted the significantly lighter Roval Control SL from the cross-country range. Whether ultra-light XC wheels are a sensible tuning choice on a 140-millimetre trail bike is open to debate – but in terms of weight, they do give the special edition a clear advantage. The same applies to the narrower and lighter tyres.
Specialized has shaved off those final few grams by using uncompromising, high-end components. These include, amongst others, the extremely lightweight BikeYoke Revive seatpost and the exclusive Trickstuff Piccola braking system with titanium hardware. Weight was also a key consideration when it came to the brake discs: instead of 200-millimetre rotors, a 180-millimetre disc is used at the front and, at the rear, just a 160-millimetre disc.
The more closely you examine the spec list, the clearer it becomes that some of the weight-saving measures no longer fit entirely within the original scope of a trail bike. The Ultralight version therefore seems to be intended less as a production bike and more as a feasibility study or PR exercise. It demonstrates just how light the Levo-R platform can be made – even if this means making compromises here and there and going over budget.
