If you like direct, efficient riding behaviour and like to feel every detail of the ground, the HUNT Proven Trail is just right for you. Traction and comfort are somewhat neglected - the wheels are uncompromisingly stiff. Durability, weight and price are right, and the generous crash replacement and warranty promises emphasise the trust that HUNT places in the longevity of its products. The only downside is that the wheels are only available with centre lock brake disc mounts. Carbon rims with H_Core technology
The Proven Trail Carbon wheelset runs on two different rim profiles: At the front, the rim width is 31 millimetres for more flexibility, traction and comfort. At the rear, the inner width is only 30 millimetres. Paired with a reinforced carbon layup and wider rim flanges, the focus here is on stability.
The centrepiece of the new wheels is the H_Core technology. These are carbon fibre reinforced inserts that reinforce the transition between the rim base and sidewall on both sides of the rim. According to HUNT, they help to withstand punctures and eliminate cavities in the manufacturing process, which also contributes to stability.
Hubs with 2° engagement angle
At the centre of the HUNT Proven Trail wheels are CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminium hubs. The pawls engage in the toothed disc at 2-degree intervals, which reduces crank travel to a minimum when starting off and conveys immediate engagement. The hubs come with a choice of SRAM XD, Shimano MICRO SPLINE or classic HG freehub bodies. Brake discs can only be mounted via centre lock - unfortunately, there is no six-hole version.
Direct riding behaviour on the trail
In practice, the freewheel with an engagement angle of just 2° is immediately noticeable: The power transmission is immediate, with no noticeable idle travel. Particularly on technical climbs, where you have to take the pressure off the pedals again and again on the edges of the terrain, the Proven Trail wheels can be effortlessly revved up again before you have to put your foot down.
The stiffness is impressive - both uphill and downhill, the wheels reward physical effort. On undulating terrain, where speed is generated or conserved through targeted pushing, they shine: it feels like no energy is wasted in the form of flex.
The price for this extreme stiffness: comfort and traction suffer. Robustly built, the Proven Trail wheels are also suitable for demanding terrain, but pass on power peaks to the rider almost unfiltered on hard landings or fast sequences of hits. On off-camber sections in particular, the wheels tend to bounce due to a lack of flex.
Durability: promise kept!
We put the wheelset through its paces for an entire season. On one of our long-term test bikes - the Canyon Spectral CF 9 - the HUNT Proven Trail had to endure everything: alpine tours, countless bike park visits, shuttle trips to the enduro paradise of Finale, muddy winter rides and dry summer days.
The final inspection in the BIKE test lab shows: All these strains have not harmed the wheelset. Spoke tension? Perfect, just like on the first day. Concentricity? 1A. The bearings still run as smooth as butter. A real workhorse that performs reliably even after months of hard work.
H_Care service and warranty
The H_Care service is included with every Proven Trail Carbon. It offers the original purchaser a lifetime crash replacement guarantee. HUNT covers the cost of spare parts and labour for repairs. Direct orders are guaranteed for three years from the date of purchase. The Ride & Return programme allows a 60-day test period. If you are not satisfied, you can return the wheels.
