The Trail Ray is an old favourite, but there are some surprising updates for 2022. The Air Ray will be launched as a light e-mountainbike.

R Raymon Trail Ray E 160

The developers are breathing new life into the Husqvarna subsidiary's E-Fully for the 2022 season. As a first step, the product managers have given the Trail Ray new wheels: instead of sending the bike onto the trails with a mix of 29-inch MX wheels at the front and 27.5-inch wheels at the rear like its predecessor, the new models will roll on 29er wheels. The suspension travel remains the same. Both the fork and the rear suspension provide 160 millimetres of travel. The completely new aluminium frame also has a new geometry, which should give the bike a little more agility. The chainstays have shrunk from 674 to 655 millimetres. The 485 mm reach in size L and a 64 degree steering angle should keep the bike safely on track at high speeds. The basic prerequisite for the significantly shorter rear triangle is the new and much smaller Yamaha PW-X motor. In terms of battery capacity, R Raymon leaves nothing to be desired. The 835 watt-hour battery from Simplo should not let the rider down so quickly on the climbs.

The Trail Ray E 160 is available in five equipment variants. The prices range from 3999 euros to 6299 euros. R Raymon therefore also offers an attractive entry into the E-Fully segment for beginners. However, if you prefer overall weight to suspension travel, the Trail Ray is also available in a slimmed-down version with 140 millimetres of suspension travel. Here too, there are five models to choose from, ranging from 3999 euros to 6299 euros.

Comment by Florentin Vesenbeckh, EMTB editor: It's nice to see that our tests are having an effect. We always criticised the overhanging rear triangle on the old Trail Ray. R Raymon Air Ray

Light e-mountainbikes are more in demand than ever. For the 2022 model year, R Raymon now has an answer for all those who prioritise natural handling over stoic E-MTB power with the Air Ray.

The Yamaha Air Drive engine is the centrepiece of the new model platform. The key data: 50 Newton metres of maximum torque with a weight of 2.9 kilos. Thanks to the low motor power, the developers hope to achieve a good range despite the lightweight 500 or 410 watt-hour batteries. According to the manufacturer, the top model with a 410 battery in combination with a full carbon frame weighs in at 19.4 kilos. The two cheaper models have a battery capacity of 500 watt hours.

With 150 millimetres of travel at the front and rear and 29-inch wheels, the newcomer should be up to any challenge, from a brisk after-work ride to alpine adventures. The modern geometry also contributes to the versatility of the new Air-Ray models. The 74-degree steep seat angle is designed to place the rider in a propulsion-orientated position on the bike when climbing. The steering angle, on the other hand, is relatively steep at 65.5 degrees, which should elicit a lot of playfulness from the bike. Whether this works in combination with the long 475 mm chainstays remains to be seen. On bumpy high-speed sections, the Air Ray with such a wide rear triangle will certainly have the necessary smoothness, and the bike should also climb steep climbs with ease.

The Air Ray comes in three equipment variants: from 5699 euros to 7299 euros. All bikes are based on the same carbon frame.

Felix Puello, Managing Director of Pierer E-Bikes: "We deliberately did not choose the most powerful motor torque and the maximum battery capacity for the Air Ray. The aim was to harmonise the three pillars of motor, battery and weight. That way we stay under 20 kilos."
