This is how the new Overvolt AM Carbon wants to be ridden. And thanks to the low centre of gravity, this is not just reserved for professionals, as shown in the video.
Lapierre is launching the Overvolt AM in carbon fibre in 2017. However, the French company is not simply replacing the aluminium frame with carbon fibre, but has developed a completely new frame. This is characterised by its special battery position, which was only possible thanks to the use of carbon. The development team, in which Nicolas Vouilloz is also involved, worked until the Bosch battery was positioned directly above the motor - this type of integration of Bosch components is the unique selling point of the Lapierre Overvolt AM Carbon. This effort is worthwhile, as the Bosch units are among the most powerful on the market and impress with their intuitive operation. All versions of the Lapierre Overvolt AM Carbon come with the Bosch CX Performance motor, a 500 Wh battery and Bosch Intuvia display. It is not only the low centre of gravity that enhances the handling of the E-MTB, but also the rest of the equipment and geometry. In addition to the almost classic suspension travel of 150 millimetres at the front and 140 at the rear, the Overvolt is technically "up-to-date": both Boost and a metric shock are on board. All bikes come with a single drivetrain and, thanks to rotating dropouts, the rider can choose between 27.5 inch and wider plus tyres. In addition, all Carbon Overvolt bikes come with the brand's own brand-new Vario seatpost. The geometry has also been adapted: Lapierre has shortened the chainstays for more agility, raised the seat angle to 73 degrees for better climbing characteristics and flattened the head angle to 66 degrees for more control on fast descents.
The top model impresses with its elegant and practical features. It comes with Sram's new EX1 E-MTB drivetrain. A Rock Shox Pike RC works at the front and a Rock Shox Deluxe RT shock at the rear. The brakes also come from Sram: a Guide decelerates the ride. As the Plus in the name suggests, the top version rolls on voluminous Plus tyres.
The 800 model rolls on "normal" 27.5-inch wheels and comes with Shimano XT gears (11 gears). The suspension, brakes and Vario seatpost are identical to the top model.
The cheapest carbon version also comes with Sram Guide brakes, Lapierre dropper post and metric Rock Shox RT shock. The more affordable Yari RC, also from Rock Shox, damps at the front. The drivetrain also comes from Sram: on the Overvolt 700, the rider transmits his power with the 11-speed entry-level NX groupset.
The aluminium Overvolt AM has only been slightly revised and therefore does not enjoy the extremely low centre of gravity of the Lapierre Overvolt AM Carbon. The aluminium version also has 150 millimetres of travel at the front and 140 at the rear. Like the carbon version, the aluminium version comes with Boost and can also be ridden with Plus tyres. On the drive side, the buyer does not have to make any compromises: All models apart from the AM 400 come with the powerful Bosch CX Performance motor, a 500 Wh battery and Bosch Intuvia display. The cheapest aluminium bike is powered by a Yamaha motor with a 400 Wh battery.
The AM 700, AM 600 and AM 500+ models are all available in the shop with Bosch CX Performance units, an eleven-speed drive, high-quality Rock Shox suspension, Sram Guide brakes and Lapierre Vario support. The 700 and 600 also roll on Lapierre's special 27.5-inch e-bike wheels. The 500+, on the other hand, comes on fat tyres. As described, the AM 400 comes with a Yamaha drive and the buyer also has to make slight compromises when it comes to the rest of the equipment: A Rock Shox Sektor with 140 millimetres of damping at the front and Shimano Deore brakes. On the other hand, customers of this model can look forward to an NX 1x11 drivetrain from Sram.
The French company is launching another new e-mountainbike for 2017: a cross-country and trail bike. The e-MTB comes with 27.5-inch wheels, but plus tyres can also be used here with other (separately available) dropouts. This is possible thanks to Boost, among other things. The suspension offers 120 millimetres of travel at the front and rear. Like the Overvolt AM, the Overvolt XC has a rear triangle with a virtual pivot point, called OST+. Three different models will be available:
The top model comes with the Bosch CX Performance motor and 500 Wh battery. Shimano provides the components - 11-speed Shimano XT gears and Deore brakes - while Rock Shox provides the suspension. A Recon Silver works at the front, a Monarch R at the rear.
This model is powered by a Yamaha unit with a 500 Wh battery. The chassis is identical to the top version.
The cheapest model also uses a Yamaha motor, but in conjunction with a smaller 400 Wh battery. The gears are changed by a 10-speed Shimano Deore rear derailleur. A Suntour XCR Air shock absorbs at the front and a Rock Shox Monarch R at the rear.
In 2017, Lapierre is also offering e-mountainbikes for women for the first time. To this end, the French company has adapted the geometry and add-on parts of both the Overvolt XC and the Overvolt HT to female ergonomics. There is a choice of an E-Fully with 120 millimetres of suspension travel and a hardtail.
