Trail hardtail: Ghost HybRide Kato S3.9
The Kato from Ghost has earned the title of trail hardtail: slackest head angle, shortest chainstays, powerful brakes with 200 mm discs, wide handlebars.

This makes it particularly popular with bikers who are looking for mountain bike-like handling. No other hardtail is so easy to pull onto the rear wheel and can be ridden so playfully on the trail. It still delivers a smooth ride when ridden sportily, thanks to the slack steering angle and 29er wheels. The narrow 2.25 mm tyres and the SR Suntour suspension fork, which can't quite keep up with the best in the test, mean a loss of downhill performance. Uphill, the atypical E-MTB geometry demands a more active riding style, the front wheel climbs comparatively early. Thanks to the 29-inch wheels and the sensitive Shimano drivetrain, the Kato still masters difficult climbs. If you like to ride your bike actively and don't just want to be a passenger, the Kato is the right choice. For beginners and leisure tourers, there are more docile bikes.

Conclusion: Sporty bike that comes closest to the handling of a normal mountain bike. Experienced riders get a real trail machine.

Florentin Vesenbeckh has been on a mountain bike since he was ten years old. Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
