"Never change a winning team", recognised the English football coach Sir Alf Ramsey back in the 1970s, and he was successful. After all, just because something is new doesn't mean it's automatically better. Racing pioneer Scott probably thought the same thing. Because, although the Scale has not been given a makeover for 2015, Nino Schurter is smashing the competition in the World Cup with his 27.5-inch bike.

The frame (1105 grams) can still easily keep up with the competition. Only with the 34.9 mm seatpost does it reach its comfort limits. However, the climbing artist in its yellow and black guise is not lacking in propulsion. And when we turn onto the borderline downhill section of our test lap, the Scale can no longer hide its race genes. The 29er throws itself aggressively into the berms, circling precisely through the course at racing speed. Just like a well-rehearsed team.

ConclusionThe Scale has been setting the tone in the premier class of hardtails for years. This will remain the case in 2015.

PLUS Race geometry, powerful and easy to modulate brakes
MINUS Stem clamp, narrow tyres, little comfort

The alternative All Scale models are available in two wheel sizes. Although the premium version costs 600 euros more, you get Shimano's mechanical XTR with a double crank for more range.
