Balanced, light and stiff: the geometry and frame of the Reaction GTC are identical to the test-winning 29er from BIKE 3/2014 ->. However, the Cube is a little sluggish on the climbs, the heavier wheels (4641 grams) and the hard Schwalbe tyres with Active Line rubber compound slow down the climbing characteristics. If you chase over the trails at full speed, you can feel the good-natured and smooth handling of the 29er, which is partly thanks to the flat, wide cockpit. The braking points are precise thanks to the well-modulated M615 stoppers from Shimano. When things get rough, the Manitou Marvel fork really comes into its own. However, it lacks the end progression and composure of a Reba or SID from Rock Shox on bigger hits. Our recommended setup for the fork: 100 PSI at 75 kilograms. That's 30-40 per cent more than the manufacturer's specification.
Conclusionbalanced 29er with great handling. Unfortunately, heavy wheels and underperforming tyres spoil the riding impression.
PLUS Stiff, lightweight carbon frame, balanced geometry
MINUS Tyres with favourable rubber compound, sluggish acceleration
