The great, modern carbon frame of the Stevens Sonora outshines the moderate equipment and weight.

The Sonora model marks the Hamburg-based company's entry into the world of carbon fibre. The basis for the 29er racer is a stiff, independent carbon chassis, which looks extremely tidy with fully integrated cable routing. However, marathon racers are slowed down somewhat by the 4.7-kilo, sluggish wheels. Instead of the Black Chilli version, Conti tyres "Made in China" sit on the rims. The low cockpit with narrow flat bar allows plenty of saddle elevation and a sporty riding position. Only the offset on the seatpost would not necessarily be necessary. The mix of XT, SLX and Shimano's groupless components works flawlessly, shifts and brakes less directly compared to thoroughbred XT parts and puts pressure on the weight. Overall, however, the Sonora is well-balanced as long as you're not chasing placings and records.

ConclusionThe great, modern carbon frame outshines the moderate equipment and weight. Tuning tip: lighter tyres and tubes.

PLUS Chic & modern frame, good suspension fork
MINUS Heavy wheels, favourable tyre compound, high total weight
