The MSL, which is not very light at 13.2 kilos ready to ride, is the perfect introduction to sporty mountain biking. Nicely centred and compact, the MSL places the rider between the large wheels. On steep climbs, however, the slack seat angle (72.2 degrees) means there is a lack of pressure on the front wheel. On loose surfaces, the grip of the narrow Schwalbe tyres with a favourable tyre compound is very limited. Thanks to the great silicone grips and the wide cockpit, the Principia 29er steers safely and directly over boulders and tight corners. The Raidon fork seems overwhelmed on fast hits. We would also prefer a triple crank (40/30/22).
ConclusionThe good-natured Principia 29er is reduced in its sportiness by being overweight and lacking in equipment.
PLUS Silicone handles, wide and deep cockpit
MINUS Heavy wheels, high total weight, tough fork
