A carbon hardtail is by no means anything special in the 2010 season. Almost every manufacturer has a model in its programme. However, Marin is breaking new ground with its carbon fibre racer and the US manufacturer has managed to put a very special bike on its cleated tyres.
The frame of the CXR in team design looks extraordinary. Fat down tube, bulky head tube area, curved top tube with twin seat stays. The cables run in the down tube. However, this results in a high frame weight of 1414 grams and a high overall weight. Here, the newcomer cannot yet hold a candle to the established carbon race competition. The stiffness (78 Nm/degree) is okay. Marin offers the CXR in custom builds from 2099 (Shimano SLX) to 4219 euros (Shimano XTR).
The test equipment at Shimano XT level looks sensible and combines sport with comfort. The wide, curved handlebar provides control, the XT brakes are powerful and the rather slim, flexing 30.9 millimetre seat post at least provides some riding comfort. Viewed in isolation, however, the rear triangle feels bony and hard.
Rider and bike quickly become friends on the test lap. The CXR has manoeuvrable handling (steep steering angle), it steers agilely and is fun to ride. The Fox fork with handlebar lockout is a joy to ride uphill, and you can lock the fork for a sprint in a flash. Downhill, the long suspension travel helps. A faster rolling (and possibly slightly wider) set of tyres could increase the bike's performance even further.
ConclusionWith the CXR, Marin has launched an independent carbon bike on the market. A beautiful newcomer, also attractively priced thanks to its customised design.
