Although the middle of the three Aera models is the most expensive bike in the test field, the Austrians do not offer a complete XT groupset. However, the Shimano SLX - available with either a double or triple crankset - can easily keep up with an XT in terms of functionality. Pedalling is fun on the KTM because it marches forwards at a good pace. Downhill, the Aera winds around the corners of the course like a snake. While the Reba fork smoothes out bumps at the front, the saddle doesn't have as much flex as the comfort value measured in our test lab would suggest. The small print might irritate racers: The warranty is voided if the KTM is used in marathons and the carbon frame is damaged - a pity.
ConclusionWell equipped and easy to accelerate - the sporty Aera from KTM is good for best times. The only thing that speaks against racing is the limited warranty.
PLUS Lightweight frame, sporty geometry, 180 mm brake discs
MINUS Loss of warranty for racing use, second bottle cage position
