The smooth rear tyre suggests that the Kato X 6 has racing genes. However, the first few metres on the test lap give the all-clear for the intervertebral discs.

The riding position of the entry-level bike is significantly more comfortable than that of the high-end carbon bikes from the Cross-Country World Cup. The slack steering angle and long wheelbase make the Kato good-natured and easy to control off-road. Short chainstays also ensure sufficient agility on the winding test track. The wide handlebars and short stem emphasise the direct handling. Both the weight and the spec represent the average of the test group. The Ghost shows no weaknesses either on the climbs or descents. Only the smooth Thunder Burt profile of the Schwalbe Evolution rear tyre reaches its limits early on in wet conditions. The hard saddle could provide a little more comfort. The understated design with orange colour accents looks elegant. The cables are routed on the outside for easy maintenance.

Test summary of the Ghost Kato X

The alternative: The Kato 7 AL is available for just 1000 euros with similar gearing but a much cheaper fork and lower quality tyres.
