Macina! The KTM lives up to its name on our climbing test bench. In the practical test, too, it clearly shows its strengths on the climbs.

The riding position is upright, the chainstays long, which keeps the front wheel stoically glued to the ground. The combination of a powerful motor and mountain-ready gearing also propels the bike up steep hills. Thanks to the 29-inch wheels, the bike generates plenty of grip, but the narrow and moderately profiled tyres quickly run out of traction in demanding terrain or mud. Downhill, the KTM soon reaches its limits. The geometry and narrow handlebars convey more nervousness than safety, and the tyres and brakes reinforce this impression. The suspension fork works with steel springs and cannot be easily adjusted to the rider's weight, although it is comparatively sensitive. The large Intuvia display reinforces the cosy character; in sporty use, the large screen is very exposed.

Conclusion: A cosy tourer for long rides on asphalt and gravel roads. Other bikes master challenging terrain more confidently.

Annoying: Once the seat post is adjusted, there are already big scratches in the aluminium. Badly worn seat tubes should actually be a thing of the past. Unfortunately not on the test bikes from KTM and Univega.Photo: Markus Greber Annoying: Once the seat post is adjusted, there are already big scratches in the aluminium. Comfort instead of sportiness: The large Intuvia display from Bosch is easy to read and provides a lot of information. However, the bulky part is very exposed in the event of a fall. It also doesn't look very sporty. Florentin Vesenbeckh has been on a mountain bike since he was ten years old. Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
