Instead of their stylish carbon racer (Raven), Focus sent the only aluminium bike, the top model of the Black Forest, into the test field. The solid chassis adds a good 500 grams to the weight. No problem if the components are better - but for 1799 euros they are not. Due to the shifting mix with X9 shifters and FSA cranks, the front shifting travel is rather long. The long top tube gives the bike a sporty character. The aluminium hardtail with the wide cockpit is easy to steer through rough trails. The fully usable suspension travel of the Reba fork matches the balanced character of the Black Forest. Fast propulsion is guaranteed by Continental's X-King tyres made of high-quality Black Chilli compound. The Focus loses points due to the weak Magura stoppers and the lack of a voluntary warranty beyond the statutory two-year period.
ConclusionSuccessful hardtail for aluminium fans with balanced riding characteristics. Robust and durable, but somewhat heavier.
PLUS Favourable price, balanced geometry
MINUS Heaviest frame, weak braking performance, long shifting distances
