Eight mountain bike hardtails in a touring test
Mountain bikes as touring and everyday bikes have their advantages: stable chassis and a durable selection of components. Attractive hardtails are available for as little as 999 euros. Together with BIKE magazine, we compared eight models.

In principle, 26-inch bikes are also ideal as touring and cargo bikes for everyday use. In the comparison test of our sister magazine Bike, eight entry-level bikes in the highly competitive price segment of 999 euros were tested for their touring characteristics. The relatively inexpensive mountain bikes have sturdy aluminium frames and, without exception, hydraulic disc brakes as well as reliable add-on parts and durable bottom brackets.

Only the bikes from Carver, Müsing, Kreidler and Bergamont have braze-on threads for attaching mudguards or a rear rack. For the other models, you should try out solutions with clamps in the bike shop to make sure that the parts are easy to mount, do not rub anywhere or stick out too far after mounting.
