A hardtail for everything from cross-country to marathon to trail. That's what the Mondraker Chrono DC is supposed to be. At the beginning of the year, the Spanish label presented a new edition of the downcountry hardtail in aluminium. Now Mondraker is adding a carbon counterpart to the versatile bike with a rigid rear end. 120 millimetres of suspension travel on the fork, 2.4 inch wide tyres on 29 inch wheels and a telescopic seat post are designed to make the carbon hardtail fun to ride on trails. A carbon frame developed from scratch promises a low weight despite its downhill potential. What more could downcountry bikers want? Here are all the details about the brand new Mondraker Chrono Carbon DC.
As with the aluminium Mondraker Chrono DC, the lighter carbon version also gets the full downcountry innovation package. The suspension fork is 67.5 degrees flat with 120 millimetres of travel in the Mondraker Chrono Carbon DC and is designed to offer both composure and reserves on demanding cross-country trails. 2.4 inch wide 29er tyres promise damping and grip. Mondraker also equips two model variants with dropper posts and 180 millimetre brake discs to ensure riding safety even on steep descents.
The centrepiece of the new Mondraker hardtail is a completely renewed carbon frame. Lightweight carbon enables frame weights from 1150 grams and complete bike weights from 11.6 kilos despite trail suitability. Although this puts the Chrono Carbon DC well above the super-light frame weight of the Mondraker Podium Carbon, it achieves an extremely respectable value for the chassis with its one degree slacker geometry.
For the Chrono Carbon DC, Mondraker has dispensed with high-end equipment variants and is only launching three complete bikes between 2199 and 3499 euros. For comparable weights, 120-millimetre trail bikes can easily cost 10,000 euros. So there are definitely reasons in favour of a downcountry hardtail. It is not for nothing that the market has recently seen more and more carbon hardtails with 120 millimetre travel, such as the Rose PDQ or the new Focus Raven.
The new frame of the Chrono Carbon DC contains the DNA of other successful Mondraker bikes, such as the F-Podium, Neat or Crusher. Details such as a high level of seating comfort and two bottle cage mounting points should also predestine the downcountry hardtail for enduring marathon missions. The Spaniards have equipped all three model variants with a new cockpit made from their own OnOff components. A 760 millimetre wide aluminium handlebar is designed to offer a particularly high level of control on descents. With four different sizes from S to XL, all downcountry bikers should be able to find a suitable Chrono Carbon DC.
In addition to the slack head angle, the Mondraker Chrono Carbon DC's long reach values of 425 millimetres in size S to 475 millimetres in size XL should help with directional stability. A 74.5 degree seat angle promises plenty of pressure on the cranks, even on long tours and marathons. In order to maintain the agility of the downcountry hardtail on winding trails and through tight corners, Mondraker opts for 430 millimetre short chainstays in all frame sizes.
With the Chrono Carbon DC, Mondraker completes its range of downcountry hardtails. At the same time, the Spanish label is introducing new colour variants for the aluminium version that has been available for some time.
