The Cube 29er can't hide its racing genes: The riding position is stretched and low, the stylish frame (1873 g) flexes like a carbon chassis thanks to the filigree seat stays, and the gear cables run in the down tube. The Fox fork (CTD system defective on the test bike) and the SLX-XT drivetrain also fit the bill. But with the heaviest wheels in the test field (4939 g), you won't win any sprints. Only the simple Schwalbe tyres are able to shake up the otherwise calm handling. This is due to the hard, cheap tyre compound (Active Line), which offers little grip on loose terrain. The groupless Shimano stoppers decelerate reliably, but don't come close to an Avid Elixir 3 or 5 in terms of ergonomics and braking power.
ConclusionGood-natured sports bike, which is slowed down somewhat by the overweight wheels. Very good equipment except for tyres and brakes.
PLUS Deep, wide cockpit, high comfort (frame)
MINUS Heavy wheels, weak brakes, tyre choice
