Centurion is replacing its 26-inch hardtail in the carbon segment with a new development in 650B. What's the benefit?

Even though the Centurion team won the BIKE Transalp on the 29-inch version, the Magstadt-based company has added a 650B version of the Backfire to its hardtail range. The geometry with its steep angles is more similar to its 26-inch predecessor (2014 only in the entry-level segment) than the 29er version. The weight and the lively, agile handling of the stiff 27.5-inch Backfire (92 Nm/degree headset stiffness) are at the forefront and difficult to achieve with a 29er. This is made possible by the 950 gram lightweight carbon fibre frame with its curved, solid-looking head tube.

The test at the 211-kilometre Salzkammergut Trophy marathon offered enough vertical metres and trail descents to tease out all the characteristics of the 27.5-inch Backfire. Technical sections are mastered with precision thanks to the direct steering and the Suntour fork (SID XX WC as standard) on the test bike. This added manoeuvrability is equal to the 26-inch bike. However, when it comes to smoothness on gravelled high-speed descents, the test bike does not come close to the smoothness of the 29er. The squeaky, weak R1 stoppers from Formula are replaced by Avid XX brakes on the standard model. The noticeable comfort on the saddle is made for long distances: the slightly flexing seat stays and the thin-walled PRC carbon seat post ensured that even after 200 kilometres the back didn't pinch during the Salzkammergut Trophy. Only the super-light Sun Ringle wheels (ridden with latex milk) paid tribute to the tough trail use: at the end of the test distance, a spoke broke on the rear wheel. In addition to four carbon versions, Centurion will also have six aluminium models of the 650B Backfire in its range.

ConclusionWith the stiff, super-light 27.5-inch Backfire, Centurion perfectly utilises the advantages of 650B. With this agile top racer, you could easily line up on the World Cup start line.
