Even though the 29er version has now overtaken the Grand Canyon AL as Canyon's bestseller, the 11-kilo classic remains a safe bet for beginners. The sophisticated geometry is one of the most balanced in the hardtail sector. Uphill you feel comfortable without biting into the stem with your teeth. Downhill, the front wheel with its grippy Nobby Nic tyres follows every steering movement with ease. Although Canyon is increasingly cutting back on equipment, it still makes sense: With a Reba fork, Mavic system wheels and a Shimano mix, Canyon has opted for a robust and durable combination. The frame also moves with the times: it comes with a tapered head tube, internally routed cables and a post mount at the rear.
Test conclusion: You can't get much more for 1000 euros: the good-natured Canyon sports bike scores with sensible equipment and balanced riding characteristics.
PLUS Balanced geometry, wide range of use, modern frame
