With the new Exceed CFR, Canyon is not only expanding its current Exceed platform to include a gravel version with drop bars, but is also updating the hardtail with a high-end cross-country and marathon model featuring flat bars. The top-of-the-range model is uncompromisingly aimed at ambitious racers who prioritise maximum efficiency, low weight and maximum propulsion in marathons and stage races. Despite its dream spec, the Koblenz-based manufacturer is keeping its feet on the ground with a price of 5,999 euros. Some other manufacturers charge as much as 10,000 euros or more for similarly specced race hardtails. Ambitious racers sense a bargain.
At the heart of the Canyon Exceed CFR is the same carbon frame already used in the well-known versions. The platform combines a low overall weight with race-oriented geometry and is designed to show its strengths both on long climbs and in technically demanding XC sections. In keeping with its sporting ambitions, Canyon has fitted a RockShox SID SL Ultimate with 100 millimetres of travel. The lightweight, short-travel fork emphasises the Exceed CFR’s character as a classic race hardtail for long-distance marathons.
Although the Canyon Exceed CFR is designed as a bike uncompromisingly focused on speed, the Koblenz-based manufacturer has included a number of aesthetic and practical details. The seatpost clamp is integrated into the frame and the cables run through the headset into the frame. Generously sized protectors are designed to shield the carbon from damage. There is a third bottle cage beneath the down tube – handy for long rides without refreshment stops. A storage compartment is also integrated into the down tube, which can accommodate essentials such as tools and a windbreaker.
For the drivetrain, Canyon has fitted the Exceed CFR with the wireless SRAM XX SL AXS drivetrain. This top-of-the-range groupset from SRAM is one of the lightest electronic gear systems in the cross-country sector and is regarded in its discipline as one of the highest-quality drivetrains a racer can buy. The package is rounded off by DT Swiss XRC 1200 carbon wheels. They are designed to deliver particularly fast acceleration and a direct riding feel – characteristics that are just as sought-after in XC racing as they are over long marathon distances.
This hardtail does not feature a dropper post. Thanks to its leaf-spring design, the Canyon VCLS 2.0 carbon seatpost promises a high level of riding comfort, even when races run to a longer duration. Canyon’s one-piece carbon cockpit saves further weight. All in all, the complete bike weighs well under ten kilos. With its comprehensive spec, the Canyon Exceed CFR is clearly positioned as a workhorse for ambitious cross-country and marathon riders.
A high-quality, lightweight hardtail still holds an undeniable fascination for sporty mountain bikers like me! The Canyon Exceed CFR continues to embody that uncompromising passion for marathon racing into the 2027 model year. Of course, this high-end race bike isn’t for everyone, but given its spec and attention to detail, the asking price is absolutely fair. - Jan Timmermann, BIKE editor
