Gourmet wine has a bland aftertaste when it is served in a Tetra Pak. This is also the case with the Cannondale F-SI 3: the potential of the high-quality frame is held back by the equipment.

Narrow tyres with wire carcass, less ergonomic brakes with long 4-finger brake levers and wheels weighing more than five kilos (including discs, tyres and cassette) are well below the standard of the test group. Despite the lightweight frame, the Cannondale weighs almost 13 kilos ready to ride. The geometry is harmonious and, with a low stack value (frame height), also allows for sporty riding positions. However, the extra pounds and tyres lacking comfort and grip make off-road excursions a feat of strength. Braking manoeuvres require a lot of manual force from the rider, as the Shimano brakes are a little hesitant for riding on single trails. There is no quick release for lowering the seatpost.

Test summary of the Cannondale F-Si 3

High-quality frame with favourable equipment. Other bikes are much more fun off-road.

PLUS Lightweight frame, lifetime guarantee
MINUS Heavy wheels, favourable equipment, no quick-release saddle clamp

The alternative: For 300 euros more, Cannondale gives its F-SI aluminium frame, better tyres and a better braking system. The investment in the F-SI 3 is well worth it.
