Light doesn’t automatically mean fast – and heavy doesn’t automatically mean slow. Optimal performance isn’t achieved by the lowest figure on the scales, but by striking the right balance between weight, stability, geometry and chassis performance. Modern enduro bikes in particular demonstrate this: A few extra grams in the right places can significantly improve control, traction and confidence.
The comments made by Christian Textor and Stefan Bax illustrate just how complex the debate surrounding weight in the gravity segment is. Whilst with cross-country bikes, every gram can make a difference, the following apply in the Enduro and gravity disciplines have different priorities. It’s not just about climbing – it’s mainly about how quickly, safely and in a controlled manner you can descend. And that’s where a few extra grams can often make all the difference.
Weight has always been one of the key selling points in mountain biking. Lightweight wheels, carbon components and slender frames promise better acceleration, easier handling and less effort on climbs. In racing in particular, every gram saved can make a difference.
However, as soon as riding enjoyment and performance on descents are included in the specifications, mountain bikes find themselves caught between two priorities: they need to be light enough for efficient climbs, whilst at the same time being able to cope with rough descents. Enduro bikes, in particular, have to strike this balance. They need to perform well on the climb whilst matching the performance of a small downhill bike on the descent.
This is precisely where the two industry experts come in. Former Enduro World Cup professional Christian Textor and Stefan Bax, Head Engineer at YT, examine the question of what role weight really plays in this segment from different perspectives.
Christian Textor knows both sides of the sport. As a former Enduro World Cup professional, he regularly pushes bikes to their limits. For him, a lightweight bike has clear advantages – but only as long as this doesn’t compromise the actual task at hand.
“Of course, every weight category has its advantages, and I, too, would prefer a bike that’s as light as possible for getting up the hill or bunny-hopping onto a table tennis table.”
For Textor, however, the real challenge only begins after that. An enduro bike has to perform well, above all, on descents. That’s where the tyres, wheels, frame and suspension determine control and confidence.
“An enduro bike’s capabilities don’t stop at the mountain or the table tennis table – that’s where they really begin, because my focus is on downhill performance and the bike’s durability in that context.”
Textor therefore sees little point in extreme lightweight designs, particularly when it comes to components such as tyres or wheels. Whilst lightweight casings or particularly delicate parts may save weight, in his view they often come with drawbacks in terms of durability and handling.
“As well as the risk of something breaking, in most cases it actually reduces performance and driving pleasure.”
An interesting point from Textor’s experience: even professionals don’t always try to save every gram in competition. On the contrary. In the Downhill and Enduro World Cups in particular, riders sometimes deliberately optimise their bikes by adding extra weight.
This isn’t about having a heavier bike for its own sake, but about improving handling by achieving the highest possible ratio of suspended to unsuspended mass. More mass in the right places can make the bike run more smoothly, reduce vibrations and provide greater traction.
“In downhill and also in the Enduro World Cup, the top riders add weight to the centre of the bike to achieve greater stability and traction. Freeride riders deliberately choose heavier tyres and sturdy, heavy rims to stay more stable in the air on big jumps.”
YT’s development department is also working intensively on the relationship between weight, durability and performance. Stefan Bax, Chief Engineer at the German direct-to-consumer retailer, does not view a bike’s weight as an isolated development objective.
“To put it simply: here at YT, we develop mountain bikes for their intended use, with a focus on durability and performance.”
In the development process, this approach is evident right down to the smallest detail. Bearings, seals, frame construction and components are not optimised solely for minimum weight, but for a long service life under realistic operating conditions.
“We don’t really set ourselves a target weight; rather, it is the result of various requirements to which we attach greater priority: stability, rigidity and durability.”
For Bax, a good mountain bike is not created by saving as many grams as possible, but by striking the right balance between all its features.
Of course, even modern frames can be continuously optimised. Simulations and tests now make it possible to produce extremely precise designs. However, every gram saved has consequences – often in terms of price as well.
“Whilst endless iterations in simulations and test bench trials of carbon fibre lay-ups and aluminium tube wall thicknesses might save a gram or two here and there, ultimately the effort involved would be reflected in the price and would run counter to our understanding of a sound cost-benefit ratio.”
In the world of enduro, in particular, this raises the question: is a bike that’s 200 grams lighter actually faster, if it means reduced reserves and a higher price?
Stefan Bax believes that other factors are far more decisive in determining a mountain bike’s handling. In particular, geometry and suspension setup play a key role.
“There are plenty of other factors that influence the bike’s handling far more effectively than its overall weight. A well-balanced geometry with a perfectly tuned suspension system is the be-all and end-all.”
The position of the mass also plays an important role. A central centre of gravity can improve handling and benefit the chassis. Keyword: more unsprung mass. YT uses this approach, for example, in the TUES Carbon Downhill Frame, whose main frame was deliberately not designed to be as light as possible.
“Our TUES Carbon Downhill frame, for example, has deliberately been given a heavier lay-up on the main frame (heavier than would have been necessary in terms of strength) in order to improve the mass ratio and increase its inherent damping.”
The discussion shows that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question ‘light or heavy?’ when it comes to mountain bikes. A 10-kilo cross-country race bike serves a completely different purpose to a 17-kilo enduro bike designed for bike parks and Alpine descents.
Lightweight construction still makes sense – particularly where efficiency and speed are crucial. But when it comes to tougher trail riding, it’s not just the figure on the scales that counts. A robust bike with sturdy components can be faster, safer and, ultimately, more fun.
The most exciting development in modern mountain bikes therefore lies not in the quest to shave off every gram, but in the intelligent distribution of weight. Less mass where it offers no advantage – and sufficient reserves where it provides control and confidence.
