For those on a budget: low-cost freeriders secure the future of the sport, because what young person can afford bikes costing over 3,000 euros? Many manufacturers have models around €2,000 in their programme for next year.

Does freeriding have to be expensive? We wanted to find out and tested the cheapest bikes.

Whenever I came up with super bargains and proudly showed my grandma the drill for 19.90 euros or the metal detector for 40 euros, she put the brakes on my euphoria and said: "Son, you'd better buy something good!"

Grandma was right, because the drill howled at the first thick wall, sent a brief SOS signal and then fell silent forever. And my cheap treasure hunter didn't even find the dustpan buried in the sandpit. The same applies to bikes: instead of cluttering up your garage with junk, it's better to buy something proper straight away. But how much do you have to shell out to get a "real" freerider? This test will find out.
