If money were no object, then … – most Germans would prefer not to dwell on this thought. After all, only around ten per cent of the population here say they do not worry about money. Regardless of how much money you’re willing or able to spend on a new bike, for many people, mountain biking is more than just a sport. Cycling is a statement of self-determination, freedom and individuality – and many want their bike to convey this attitude too. Exclusive brands, expensive accessories and exceptional aesthetics allow you to make a statement. And even though such desires are usually fulfilled in the high-end segment, there’s certainly no need to settle for run-of-the-mill off-the-peg kit in the mid-price range.
We’ve picked out four affordable bikes from the market that stand out from the crowd in terms of design and technical specifications.
Merida Big.Nine TR 5000
The flowing lines of its carbon frame make the Merida one of the most aesthetically pleasing hardtails to have been tested by BIKE over the past year.
With a 120mm fork and slightly flatter angles, the Big.Nine combines cross-country DNA with downhill capabilities. The CF3 carbon frame utilises Nano Matrix Carbon technology, in which nanoparticles in the resin are said to increase impact resistance by up to 40 per cent. The Flex-Stay construction allows the seat stays and chain stays to act like leaf springs, reducing vibrations and enhancing comfort. 29-inch wheels, fitted with tyres up to 2.4 inches wide, fit between the chain stays. The RockShox Reba RL fork doesn’t shy away from even the roughest descents. The Shimano groupset, comprising a mix of Deore, SLX and XT components, is thoroughly functional.

You simply have to love a carbon frame like this, with its long geometry and high-quality components. Even so, the price remains fair.
The Rose PDQ 1 features a carbon frame with 120 mm of front suspension travel. The name stands for ‘Pretty Damn Quick’ and describes the bike’s positioning between cross-country and trail. And indeed: the Race hardtail from Bocholt looks light and fast even when stationary. Weighing in at 10.9 kg in size M, this hardtail is one of the lighter models in the downcountry category. Rose is currently offering the bike for a modest €2,300. Judging by the spec alone, that’s a tempting price: a high-quality carbon frame, a RockShox SID Base fork with 120 millimetres of travel and three riding modes, as well as a complete Shimano XT groupset with a 510 per cent gear range across twelve gears. The brand has really hit the mark with the design of its full-suspension platform. Organic carbon shapes give the new trail bike an elegant look, which can even be further customised using the online configurator.
The Propain Hugene CF is the logical evolution of the direct-to-consumer brand’s popular trail bike. In the BIKE test, it impressed as a modern, versatile trail bike with a focus on efficiency and riding enjoyment.
The carbon frame has been completely redesigned and is built for 29-inch wheels. It features a 140 mm fork at the front and 130 mm of rear suspension travel. This means the Hugene deliberately remains in the classic trail segment and is clearly distinct from the more powerful enduro model, the Tyee. The geometry is modern and well-balanced: a flatter head angle for safety on descents, and a steeper seat angle for efficient climbing performance.

The frame is made entirely of carbon fibre, including the rear triangle. The cables are routed into the frame as early as the headset. According to the manufacturer, the bike weighs 13.4 kg fully kitted out. This places the full-suspension bike at the lower end of the weight range for comparable trail bikes in this price bracket.
