E-bikes are not only getting more and more expensive, they are also getting heavier! At an average of 25.1 kilograms, our touring bikes from the current EMTB issue 1/21 - the heaviest test group we have ever tested. And this despite the fact that the bikes are no longer in the entry-level class with prices of around €5,000.
Price and weight driver number one: the large batteries. Almost no manufacturer now uses batteries with less than 625 watt hours. In terms of range, the large batteries are of course an advantage, but the additional weight of around 700 grams compared to a 500 watt-hour battery is clearly noticeable.
So we want to know: How useful is this development for you? How do you use your e-bike? What assistance levels do you use in practice, how often are your batteries really empty? Because: E-bikes could be significantly lighter - and still deliver a decent range. But that would mean cancelling the turbo mode. This is what the light e-MTBs, which are currently in vogue, do. A sensible option?
