Tune takes an interesting approach with the Nano Gravel 45: instead of focussing on maximum lightweight construction, the Baden-based company presents a well thought-out compromise between low weight, aerodynamic efficiency and wide-ranging usability. The 45 mm high carbon rim positions the wheelset between classic low gravel wheels and aerodynamically optimised road models.
With an internal width of 30 mm, Tune is following the current trend towards wider rims. This allows the use of voluminous gravel tyres with lower air pressure - an advantage in terms of comfort, grip and puncture protection on rough surfaces. The outer width of 36 mm ensures clean aerodynamics when narrower tyres are fitted.
The tyre compatibility communicated by Tune is remarkable: the Nano should cut a fine figure from 38 to a full 66 mm. This considerably expands the range of applications - from fast 40 mm racing tyres to voluminous 66 mm tyres for demanding terrain.
While many manufacturers rely on hookless technology for modern carbon wheels, Tune deliberately takes the traditional route: the Nano Gravel 45 has classic hooked rims with a rim flange. Although this limits tubeless performance minimally, it increases tyre compatibility and offers an additional safety net - especially at higher pressures or in extreme conditions.
At 1355 grams (±3%), the wheelset is in the upper mid-range of the lightweight league. For comparison: Pure lightweight wheels scratch the 1200 gram mark, while robust gravel wheelsets often weigh over 1500 grams. Tune has positioned itself as a happy medium here and at the same time specifies a maximum system weight of 130 kg - significantly more than many ultra-light competitors.
The in-house Nano CL hub with POEntry technology offers 69 engagement points for fast engagement. Enduro bearings in steel or ceramic are available, as are three colour options (black, silver, red). The spokes are fitted with 24 SAPIM CX-Ray spokes front and rear - a proven standard for high-quality wheels.
Tune advertises the Nano Gravel 45 as a "Swiss army knife". The 45 mm rim height provides aerodynamic advantages at higher speeds without becoming a burden in crosswinds. The wide rim enables modern tyre setups, while the hooked design ensures compatibility.
Whether the concept proves itself in practice remains to be seen. However, the mix should be interesting for race-orientated gravel riders who also sometimes ride on asphalt. The wheelset is also an option for bikepackers who value low weight without compromising on stability.
The price is 2290 euros. A lot of money, but not unusual for a carbon wheel. The DT Swiss GRC1400 is similarly expensive and heavy with a rim height of 50 millimetres. The generous 10-year warranty that Tune offers on rims, hub bodies, axles and end caps emphasises the manufacturer's confidence in its own product quality.
The Tune Nano Gravel 45 is not a revolutionary product, but a well thought-out evolution. Anyone looking for a lightweight, versatile carbon wheelset with classic rim flanges will find an interesting option here. The combination of moderate rim height and wide inner width speaks in favour of a pragmatic approach that could prove its worth in the rough and tumble of everyday gravel riding.
