Trek goes its own way when it comes to geometry. The aluminium version of the Checkpoint is by far the longest frame in the test, the riding position is uncompromisingly sporty. The top-of-the-range SLR carbon version of the Checkpoint has a reach that is almost 3 cm shorter, something you wouldn't expect from a racing model. Rather, you can build up pressure on the pedals by leaning far forward and the front wheel receives plenty of downforce. With advanced riding technique, you'll be able to ride confidently and quickly on any surface. Pressure on the pedals is also good for your back, as the rear end is typically less flexible, so it's good for those who aren't sitting with their full weight on the saddle.
Similar to the 3T Exploro Primo Despite the below-average measurements, impacts from below pass by your body, short bumps can be absorbed well with your arms and legs, but hard "impacts", for example after a jump, really shake you up. If you've been cycling for a long time, you might consider the seating comfort and posture to be just about suitable for long journeys, but relaxed cruising is not its strong point.
If you want to get the most out of the bike, you will probably have to fit a larger chainring, but there is enough space for this thanks to the asymmetrical chainstays. The gear ratios are a good compromise for a single crankset. In addition to the short head tube, which is visually related to Trek's top aerobikes, the mass of threads for luggage is striking, and the bike is certainly not a stoically quiet and comfortable travelling companion.
This is where the gap to cyclocross closes. It's hard not to step on the gas on the Trek, despite the aluminium frame and two pounds too much. Anyone who enjoys riding technique, adrenaline and KOMs on forest tracks will find a hybrid here: half road, half gravel.
