Our verdict on the Canyon Grail CF 7

The Canyon Grail CF 7 is a great base for anyone looking for off-road speed without spending a fortune. For € 2,199, buyers get a technically sophisticated package that scores with modern geometry, clever integration solutions and proven mechanical shifting technology. Anyone looking for an agile bike for fast gravel laps and the occasional race will find what they are looking for here. A real performance statement.

Before we get into the details of the Canyon Grail CF 7, we'll give you an overview of the gravel product range from the Koblenz-based brand and take a brief look at its nomenclature.

At Canyon, the gravel world is primarily divided into two camps: "Grail" stands for speed, aerodynamics and race performance on firm ground. The "Grizl", on the other hand, is the workhorse for rough terrain, bikepacking and maximum versatility. The model abbreviations provide information about the frame material used and the quality of the components.

The top models

  • CFR (Canyon Factory Racing): The ultimate. The highest quality carbon layup is used here, which guarantees maximum stiffness with minimum weight. Equipped with top groupsets such as Shimano GRX Di2 or SRAM Red AXS and carbon wheelsets.
  • CF SLX: The high-end mid-range. These models use a lightweight carbon frame and are equipped with electronic groupsets. They offer the best ratio of professional technology and weight for racers who do not have the budget for the CFR series.

The middle class

  • CF: The solid standard. The CF frames offer carbon performance for tough everyday gravel riding. Mechanical groupsets or electronic entry-level groupsets (such as SRAM Rival AXS) are often found here.
  • AL (aluminium): The aluminium base. Robust, inexpensive and ideal for commuters or beginners looking for a durable bike.

Additional designations

  • Aero: Canyon's Aero model versions are consistently trimmed to minimise air resistance, have high-profile carbon wheels and integrated cockpits.
  • Rift: For real trail use with 40 millimetres of travel at the front. This is ensured by the DT Swiss F132 ONE gravel suspension fork with lockout via handlebar remote control.
  • Escape: Equipped with numerous attachment and mounting points for bags and panniers, suitable for adventure tours and commuting.
  • ONfly: Canyon's motorised gravel range, with Bosch SX drive, 400 Wh battery, optional range extender and 40-millimetre suspension fork

Solid technology: gearstick and equipment

Canyon uses the mechanical Shimano GRX RX820 groupset in a 2x12 configuration on the Grail CF 7. This offers the rider an extremely fine gear gradation and an enormous range that is impressive on both steep ramps and fast tarmac sections.

One highlight is the new one-piece carbon cockpit, which has been optimised for an ergonomic hand position in various positions. The cables run elegantly through the headset into the frame, which not only improves aerodynamics but also makes it easier to fit handlebar bags.
