When Canyon presented its futuristic commuter project at Eurobike 2015, a murmur went through the scene: with an unusually high degree of integration, polarising design and practical implementation of the newly and radically conceived city bike concept, the Koblenz-based company created an appealing alternative to the traditional. Canyon is now entering the new season with the 5.0. The stylish bike extends the commuter series into the mid-range segment. For 1400 euros, the discerning customer gets a whole host of independent solutions - and a bike that stands out. Its grey frame is compact and pleasing to the eye thanks to the smoothly polished tube joints. An eccentric adjusts the belt tension of the low-maintenance Alfine drivetrain. Conti's CDS system is used here, which requires less precise tension than the Gates belt due to its larger tooth profile.
The Conti pedals just as tightly as its competitor, you don't feel any differences. It uses a plastic pinion at the rear, an aluminium disc at the front and should be roughly equivalent to the "cheap Gates" CDS in terms of durability. The Alfine 8 can be shifted precisely and crisply, it is well accommodated in city traffic. However, it has a large gear jump in the heavily used range from gear 5 to 6. Shimano's "cheap discs" work smoothly in all weathers. The front light, rear light and slim carrier brackets are mounted on self-supporting Wingees plates, which can be loaded with 8 kilos per side. The plates are so stable that neither the light shakes nor does an overload cause problems for the carrier. However, it is not made for travelling luggage. The Commuter is comfortable thanks to its gently flexing carbon seat post and, above all, the extremely supple G-One tyres from Schwalbe. The 35 mm tyres with 27.5-inch dimensions roll quickly and quietly, easily absorb many small vibrations and keep the frame compact thanks to their moderate size. Foot clearance is not an issue, neither to the front wheel nor to panniers. The Commuter scurries and creeps, it rides exceptionally light-footed, dynamic and safe, making it a joy to ride. Secured bolts on the seat post and axles ensure practical, uncomplicated parking anywhere. If only it had a kickstand!
